How to convert JPG to OBJ Online

  1. Upload your JPG/JPEG image using the file selector above.
  2. Configure the 3D mesh settings:
    • Max Height: Maximum Z-axis height for the 3D mesh (in millimeters)
    • Threshold: Pixel intensity threshold (0-255) for detecting mesh areas
    • Mesh Resolution: Controls mesh density - lower resolution for faster processing on large images
    • Invert: Invert the detection for white-on-black images
  3. Click Convert JPG to OBJ to generate the 3D mesh.
  4. Download your OBJ file. The file can be opened in Blender, MeshLab, or any 3D software that supports OBJ format.

About OBJ format

  • 3D Mesh Format: OBJ is a widely supported 3D model format used in 3D graphics, animation, and printing
  • Heightmap Conversion: The converter creates a 3D heightmap where pixel intensity determines Z-axis height
  • Vertex-Based: OBJ files contain vertices (points) and faces (triangles) that define the 3D surface
  • Compatibility: Compatible with Blender, MeshLab, Cura, PrusaSlicer, and most 3D software

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an OBJ file?
OBJ is a 3D model file format that stores 3D geometry using vertices, faces, and texture coordinates. It's one of the most widely supported formats for 3D graphics, animation, and 3D printing software.
How does JPG to OBJ conversion work?
The converter treats your JPG image as a heightmap. Each pixel's brightness/intensity determines the Z-axis height in the 3D mesh. Darker pixels create lower areas, lighter pixels create higher areas. The mesh is generated as a grid of vertices connected by triangular faces.
What types of images work best?
Grayscale heightmaps work best - images where brightness represents elevation. Topographic maps, terrain images, or simple grayscale designs produce good results. High-contrast images also work well. Complex color photographs may not convert as effectively.
What does threshold do?
The threshold (0-255) determines which pixels are included in the mesh. Pixels with intensity above the threshold become part of the mesh. Lower threshold includes more pixels, higher threshold includes only brighter pixels. Adjust this to filter out noise or unwanted areas.
What is mesh resolution?
Mesh resolution controls how many vertices are created. Full resolution uses every pixel (best quality but larger files). Half resolution uses every 2nd pixel, quarter uses every 4th pixel. Lower resolution creates smaller files and faster processing, ideal for large images.
Can I 3D print the OBJ file?
Yes, the OBJ file can be used for 3D printing. Import it into a slicer (Cura, PrusaSlicer, etc.) or 3D modeling software (Blender, MeshLab) first to verify the mesh, scale it appropriately, and ensure it's manifold (watertight) for printing.
What is the maximum file size?
The maximum file size is 50MB. For very large images, use a lower mesh resolution to reduce processing time and output file size. Very high-resolution images may take longer to process.
Are my files secure?
Yes, all file processing happens securely on our servers. Files are processed immediately and are not stored permanently. We prioritize your privacy and security.
